Case studies of successful train crew scheduling optimisation
نویسنده
چکیده
UK has a large and complex passenger rail network divided into a number of franchises. Crew scheduling, one of the last stages of operations planning before services go live, is mission critical to the train operating companies, which would feel the pain of manual scheduling. As far as the author is aware, attempts by these companies to adopt an automatic optimizing train crew scheduling system were unsuccessful except with TrainTRACS. After the first adoption of TrainTRACS by ScotRail in 2003, the author has founded the University of Leeds spin-out company Tracsis to commercialise TrainTRACS fully and to expand to other operations planning functions. Since then, TrainTRACS has gained wide acceptance by the UK rail industry. This paper discusses the major factors behind the achievements of TrainTRACS drawing from practical experience of development and interaction with the industry over many years. A couple of selected case studies will be presented in the discussion.

Scheduling Train Crews: a case study for the Dutch Railways
In this paper the problem of scheduling train crew is considered. We discuss a general framework of which the method for solving the train crew scheduling problem is a special case. In particular, our method is a heuristic branch-and-price algorithm suitable for large scale crew scheduling problems. This algorithm is applied to a real life train guard scheduling problem which is provided to us ...
متن کاملA hybrid constructive heuristic and simulated annealing for railway crew scheduling
Railway crew scheduling problem is the process of allocating train services to the crew duties based on the published train timetable while satisfying operational and contractual requirements. The problem is restricted by many constraints and it belongs to the class of NPhard. In this paper, we develop a mathematical model for railway crew scheduling with the aim of minimising the number of cre...
متن کاملAn Integrated Optimization Model for Train Crew Management
Train crew management involves the development of a duty timetable for each of the drivers (crew) to cover a given train timetable in a rail transport organization. This duty timetable is spread over a certain period, known as the roster planning horizon. Train crew management may arise either from the planning stage, when the total number of crew and crew distributions are to be determined, or...
متن کاملA Comprehensive Approach for Railway Crew Scheduling Problem (Case Study: Iranian Railway Network)
The aim of this study is to propose a comprehensive approach for handling the crew scheduling problem in the railway systems. In this approach, the information of different railway trips are considered as input and the problem is divided to three separated phases. In phase I, we generate all feasible sequences of the trips, which are named as the pairings. A depth-first search algorithm is deve...
متن کاملCrew Scheduling Considering Both Crew Duty Time Difference and Cost on Urban Rail System
Urban rail crew scheduling problem is to allocate train services to crews based on a given train timetable while satisfying all the operational and contractual requirements. In this paper, we present a new mathematical programming model with the aim of minimizing both the related costs of crew duty and the variance of duty time spreads. In addition to iincorporating the commonly encountered cre...
